Caramel Apple Pie Recipe

Ingredients:

For the crust:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp sugar

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cubed

  • 6-8 tbsp ice water

For the filling:

  • 6-7 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

For the caramel drizzle:

  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

  • Optional: pinch of sea salt

Instructions:

1. Make the crust:
In a large bowl, mix the flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, until the dough just comes together. Divide into two disks, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.

2. Prepare the filling:
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and flour. Set aside.

3. Assemble the pie:
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Roll out one disk of dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie pan. Place the crust in the pan and trim excess edges. Fill with the apple mixture, dot with butter, then drizzle a little caramel over the top. Roll out the second disk of dough for the top crust and place it over the apples. Trim and crimp the edges, and cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape.

4. Bake the pie:
Bake for 20 minutes at 425°F, then reduce the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-40 minutes, until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling.

5. Finish with caramel:
Let the pie cool for at least 30 minutes. Drizzle with additional caramel sauce and a pinch of sea salt if desired. Slice, serve, and enjoy with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Tips for the Perfect Pie:

  • Mix different apple varieties for a balanced sweet and tart flavor.

  • Make sure the butter for the crust is very cold—it helps create a flaky, tender crust.

  • Don’t skip the cooling time; it helps the filling set for cleaner slices.

Pro Tip: Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate fall dessert!
